CANDLEMAS DAY, 2ND FEBRUARY
Sunday next is Candlemas Day. Candlemas commemorates the Presentation of Jesus in the temple when he was a baby. It occurs 40 days after Christmas Day. The term Candlemas meaning “Candle Mass” refers to the practice of the blessing of candles by the Priest. The candles are used during the year in the Church and in the homes of the faithful.

Candles will be blessed at the 9.30am Mass in Farran next weekend and at the 11.30am Mass in Ovens. If you wish to have candles blessed they may be handed in to both Churches during the week. Candles may also be purchased after the Mass.

LÁ LE BRÍDE, 1ST FEBRUARY
Saturday next, 1st February is the Feast of St. Brigid, Muire na nGael.. She is one of the Patron Saints of Ireland along with St. Patrick and St. Columba. Brigid was born in Dundalk in 451. She founded two monastic institutions, one for men & one for women. Brigid invited a hermit called Conleth to help her in Kildare as a spiritual pastor. She is noted for her charitable work & healing powers. St. Brigid died in 525.

ST. BRIGID’S CROSS
This came about when Brigid was called to the house of a dying chieftain. As he lay dying, Brigid picked up some rushes from the floor and began weaving a cross. When the man asked what she was doing, Brigid’s explanation of the cross calmed the man and he converted to Christianity on his deathbed. People still weave crosses today and put them on their doors to ward off fire and evil.
St. Brigid Crosses will be blessed at next Saturday’s 6.00pm Mass in Farran & at the 7.30pm Mass in Ovens.

ST. BRIGID’S CROSS PRAYER
May Brigid bless the house wherein you dwell.
Bless every fireside, every wall & door.
Bless every heart that beats beneath its roof.
Bless every hand that toils to bring it joy.
Bless every foot that walks its portals through.
May Brigid bless the house that shelters you.
Amen.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2020
26th January to 2nd February

The theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Living in Harmony with Gods Creation”. The theme encourages us to see that we all have a responsibility to care for the earth, not just for our own future, but for the future of every one of God’s creatures. It is a theme very close to the heart of Pope Francis.
We give thanks for the work & dedication of our teachers & staff in Scoil na nUamhanna, Ovens & Scoil Mhuire, Farran & also Boards of Management & Parent Associations.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY
With the co-operation of both schools, the Parish Assembly have organised Grandparent’s Day for Monday, 3rd February in Ovens & Thursday, 6th February in Farran. Fourth Class, together with their Grandparents, will attend the 9.3oam Mass in Ovens Church & the 3rd Class pupils of Farran school will attend the 9.30am Mass in Farran Church. Both classes have asked their grandparents for their memories of their own First Holy Communion Day or their favourite prayer.
After Mass there will be refreshments for the grandparents in Ovens Parish Centre on Monday 3rd Feb & in Farran Hall on 6th February. The children will return to school but they will also get some treats!!

Monday, 3rd February is also the Feast of St.Blaise and throats will be blessed after Mass.
All parishioners are, of course, welcome to the 9.30am Mass that morning.
