THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
CANDLEMAS DAY, 2ND FEBRUARY

This Sunday we commemorate the Presentation of Jesus in the temple by His Mother Mary & St. Joseph. As Scripture says, “In obedience to the Old Law, the Lord Jesus was presented in the Temple by His Mother Mary and his foster father, Joseph”. In the temple they met Simeon and the prophetess Anna. The Christ Child was revealed as the Messiah through the Canticle & words of Simeon.
The Presentation of the Lord concludes the celebration of Christmas, 40 days after the Nativity.

This Sunday is also Candlemas Day, meaning “Candle Mass” it refers to the practice of the blessing of candles by the Priest. The candles are used during the year in the Church and in the homes of the faithful.
Candles will be blessed at the 9.30am Mass in Farran and at the 11.30am Mass in Ovens. If you wish to have candles blessed they may be handed in before Mass. Candles may also be purchased after Mass.

. LÁ FÉILE BRÍDE, 1Ú FEABHRA
Anois teacht an Earraigh,
Beidh an lá ag dul chun shíneadh,
Is tar éis na féile Bríde, ardoidh mé mo sheoil!

PRAYER TO ST. BRIGID
Brigid, you were a woman of peace.
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to the darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled & anxious,
And may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world.
Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid you were a voice for the wounded and the weary.
Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens.
May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit.
Amen.

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE, 3RD FEBRUARY
This Monday, 3rd February, we celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise. He was a doctor and later became Bishop of Sebastea in Armenia. In 316 St. Blaise was arrested for being a Christian. On his way to the jail a woman set her only son, who was chocking on a fish bone, at his feet. He cured the child, and though the governor was amazed he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. He was beaten and beheaded. St. Blaise is the patron saint of throat illnesses. In pictures Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand. Such crossed candles are used for the blessing of throats on his Feast Day. These are the candles blessed on Candlemas Day.
Throats will be blessed after the 9.30am Mass in Ovens and at 6pm in the evening (No Mass). Blessing of throats in Farran Church at 7pm on Monday evening.
