Reflection given by Eilís Casey & Lorraine Buckley of Cork & Ross Mission & Ministry Office at Ovens/Farran Ministry Thanksgiving Mass on 18th April in Ovens Church.
Part 1:
Jesus imparts to us a timeless truth in Mark’s Gospel: “whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all” (Mk 10:43-44). These words resonate deeply with our understanding of service, a cornerstone of our faith. As we gather today, we unite in gratitude for the diverse tapestry of individuals who selflessly dedicate themselves to serving our parish community.

From the quiet acts of kindness to the visible expressions of love, each act of service embodies the essence of Christ’s teachings. Inspired by His example, we come together to honour and acknowledge the collective effort of all who contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of our parish life. Let us journey together in reflection and prayer, guided by the spirit of service that binds us as one Body in Christ.
We come together as a community to reflect on the beauty of service and the interconnectedness it fosters within our parish.
Let us take a moment to quiet our hearts and minds, inviting the presence of the Holy Spirit among us.

Part 2 next week.

THE MONTH OF MAY
May is the month devoted to Our Blessed Lady.
In his 1965 encyclical, Mense Maio, Pope Paul VI identified the month of May as an opportune time to incorporate special prayers for peace into traditional May devotions.

Family Devotions:
One particular practice characteristic of May devotions is the May Altar, whether in a church or as a ”House Altar” in the home. The family can pray to Our Lady around this altar, consisting of a table, picture or statue of Our Lady, candles and decorated with May flowers.
The hymn mostly associated with Our Lady and sung very often during May is “Queen of the May”.
“O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels & Queen of the May. O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels & Queen of the May”.
