Third Sunday of Easter
Two Men on a Train
A fast train was moving towards Paris. In one compartment there were two men, one old, the other young. They spoke for a while about this or that. Then the old man took out his Rosary Beads and began to say the Rosary. The young man was surprised and said to him that he appeared to be an intelligent man, but that he was disappointed to find that he still believed in Religion etc. But the old man pointed out to hi that life could be difficult and dark and that we all need some guide and for hin it was his Faith. So he asked the young man what his guide was. He replied that it was science and that it would solve all the problems of the world. The old man admitted that he knew something of the subject but that h still had a lot to learn.
The young man then remarked as they continued their conversation that he was actually on his way to a lecture being given by a famous scientist and recommended a good book on science to the old man and even offered to post it to him. So the old man offered him his visiting card. It read: “Louis Pasteur, President Institute of Scientific Research, Paris”. He was the very man who would be delivering the lecture to which the young man was going! Louis Pasteur, 1822 to 1895, was the microbiologist who, among other things discovered a vaccine for Rabies which affects dogs mainly, but ourselves too if they bite us. His name is also given to his work on pioneering pasteurising, eg. Milk, instruments etc. from his name “Pasteur”.
Nowadays, research institutes in many parts of the world bear his name. At the moment the one in Paris is making great efforts to discover a vaccine to deal with the Coronavirus.
