ALL SAINTS DAY
This Sunday, 1st November, we celebrate All Saints Day. The Feast of All Saints, on its current date, is traced to the foundation by Pope Gregory 111(734-741) of an oratory in St. Peter’s for the relics “of the Holy Apostles & of all saints, martyrs & confessors and of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world”. The celebration of All Saints Day & All Souls Day, 2nd November, comes from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in Heaven and the living. The Feast Day revolves around “giving God solemn thanks for the lives & deaths of his Saints”.

REMEMBERING
Everybody loves to be remembered.
But if we want to be remembered, we have a duty also to remember.
Memory is a powerful thing,
Wrongly used it can bring death rather than life.
Rightly used it is a form of immortality.
It keeps the past alive.
Those we remember never die.
They continue to walk and talk with us.
Their influence is still felt among us.
There is nothing stronger or more helpful than a good remembrance.

Dear departed friends,
We want you to know we haven’t forgotten you.
We remember you.
And your memory most definitely brings life to us today.
May it also assure us of life for you, that eternal life Christ came on earth to give us.

NOVEMBER
November is a special month in which we remember our dead. But, unfortunately, it will be somewhat different this year due to the Coronavirus restrictions.
Bishop Fintan has requested that there will be no Cemetery Prayers this year or the Annual Mass in Remembrance for those who died during the year. However, we will be able to have our Annual Novena of Masses on Webcam, Live Streamed. During the Novena we will remember each night in a special way 4 or 5 of our people who died in the past year, commencing with those who died in November, 2019. A votive light will be lit for each person and their name will be put on the Tree of Remembrance. The lights will be placed on the cross near the altar and if a family member wishes to take the light home they may do so, names will be on each light. Families are invited to join from home and light their own candle as they do so.

The families of those who died during the year have been notified regarding the night of the Novena when their loved ones will be remembered.
We are, of course, keenly aware that several families who were bereaved in the past year had to endure very restricted funerals due to Covid 19. This made them more difficult still. Our thoughts and prayers are with all families in their bereavements.

NOVENA FOR THE DEAD
The Novena begins on All Souls Day, 2nd November and continues until 10th Nov, both days inclusive.
Novena Masses at 7.30pm each evening, Live Streamed in Ovens Church.

CEMETERY VISITS
People will, of course, be able to make their own personal visits to cemeteries, which in any case is so much part of November. There are copies of a lovely Prayer Service in the porches of our Churches, which you may use on your visit to the cemeteries. Holy water is available in Ovens Church.
I measc na Naoimh go raibh ár marbh uile.

TREE OF REMEMBRANCE
As in previous years we will have our Tree of Remembrance in Ovens Church. During the Novena for the Dead the names of those who died since 1st November 2019 to 31st October 2020 will be placed on the tree and will remain there until the end of November.

Novena for the Dead envelopes
Envelopes now available in the porches of both Churches.

Prayer and Remembrance
This year, the month of November, in which we traditionally remember the dead and pray for the bereaved, will be particularly poignant. We sense a huge yearning for consolation and hope in the heart of our people.  We are especially mindful in 2020 of those grieving families, who, because of restrictions, have been unable to experience the customary spiritual and community supports which are so much part of our Irish tradition. On 1st November at 3.00pm in the Cathedral, Bishop Fintan will lead a short service of prayer to dedicate the month of November to ‘Remembrance of the Dead and Prayer for the Bereaved’.  We invite you to unite with us in this moment. www.corkcathedral.ie
