PRAYER ON VISITING/PASSING A CEMETERY

May perpetual light shine upon the faces of all who rest here.
May the lives they lived unfold further in spirit.
May all their past travail find ease in the kindness of clay.
May the remembering earth mind every memory they brought.
May the rain from the Heavens fall gently upon them.
May the wild flowers and grass whisper their wishes into light.
May we reverence the village of presence in the stillness of this silent field.

NOVEMBER NOVENA
We continue our Novena for the Dead through our weekend Masses and also on Monday and Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. We do so through our link to Ovens Church, mindful too of Jesus words “Where people gather & link in prayer He is with them”. It would be a lovely idea to light a candle for those for whom we pray, as we pray the Mass apart but together.

CEMETERY VISITS
Many people visit the graves of family and friends all year round, but especially at November time. You may also like to use the prayer leaflet available in the porches of both Churches and then sprinkle your grave with Holy water. Holy water is available in Ovens Church.

May all our dead Rest in Peace.
I dteannta Dé go raibh siad.

TREE OF REMEMBRANCE
As in previous years we have our Tree of Remembrance in Ovens Church. During the Novena for the Dead the names of those who died since 1st November 2019 to 31st October 2020 are being placed on the tree during Mass each evening and will remain there until the end of November.

ALL THE SAINTS OF IRELAND
Friday last, the 6th November was the Feast of All the Saints of Ireland.
During the Papacy of Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922) the Feast of All the Saints of Ireland was instituted. Oliver Plunkett was beatified in 1920 and canonised in 1975, thus becoming the first new Irish Saint for almost seven hundred years. It recalls especially the seventeen Irish Martyrs of the 16th and 17th centuries who were beatified by Pope John Paul 11 in 1992 and many others who died as a result of persecution during what in Ireland are known as the “Penal Times”.
Only four saints, St. Malachy, St. Lawrence O’Toole, St. Oliver Plunkett and St. Charles of Mount Argus have been officially canonised. All the other Irish Saints, such as Ss. Patrick, Brigid and Colmcille, are saints, as it were, by acclamation of the local church, before the official papal canonisation process was established.
Recently we had quite a few beatifications.

SAFEGUARDING
Messages from Bishop Fintan and Safeguarding Committee in their Autumn Newsletter
Dear Friends,
I welcome this Safeguarding Newsletter in the Diocese of Cork and Ross as a way of highlighting the fact that the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults is central to the life and mission of the Diocese. Earlier this year, a Review of Safeguarding by the National Board for the Safeguarding of Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland stated that the safeguarding structure in the Diocese is “robust and effective”.
The Review concluded that there is full compliance with Safeguarding Children Policy and Standards within the Diocese of Cork and Ross. I wish to thank Ms. Cleo Yates, Diocesan Director of Safeguarding, the Diocesan Safeguarding Committee members, volunteer safeguarding representatives and parish clergy who continue to be vigilant as we work together to maintain the highest safeguarding standards in parishes and the Diocese.
Fintan Gavin
Bishop of Cork and Ross.

MESSAGE FROM THE SAFEGUARDING COMMITTEE
The month of October has always been the safeguarding month in the Diocese. Normally we would be holding a safeguarding conference, sending out the yearly safeguarding parish audits, visiting parishes, training etc. However, given these difficult times with Covid, things have changed and almost all our connection to the parishes is by way of online forms of communication, which brings its own challenges.
It remains important for us to continue to reassure, implement and promote the Churches safeguarding message. So we hope you find this newsletter interesting and informative.
Copies of the Safeguarding Newsletter, Autumn Issue, are available at the back of both Ovens and Farran Churches.
It is also available on the Cork and Ross Website: www.corkandross.org/safeguarding

THANK YOU
Sincere thanks to all who returned the Offertory Collection envelopes since the present Level 3 & 5 lockdowns began some weeks ago. Thanks also to those who don’t use envelopes but have made contributions. This is very much appreciated.

LEARNING ABOUT THE MASS WITH KATH & QUMEN
This week we continue to learn about the Mass with Kath & Qumen.
The Creed: After the Gospel and the Homily the Priest invites us to stand and profess our Faith. We do this by saying the Creed. There are two Creeds that can be said at Mass, the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed. The Creed tells us simply what we believe as members of the Church. We stand to show that we are followers and friends of Jesus.
Prayer of the Faithful: This is when we pray for all our needs, particularly for the Church, the leaders of our country, those who are sick & in need of God’s healing and those who have died.
