And fill us with the Spirit of Jesus.
Protect us during the week and keep us watchful in prayer as we await the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Who is the light of the world.
Amen.
JESSE TREE
This Third Week of Advent we continue decorating our Jesse Tree with symbols that represent stories from the Old Testament.
In the Seven Symbols this week we see God revealing himself to His Chosen People through their kings and prophets..
Symbols: The Shepherd’s Crook, The Stone Altar, the Empty Tent, Fire tongs with hot coals, Tears. Stone Watchtower and the City Wall.
PREPARATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS
This Sunday is Gaudemus Sunday when we light the third candle, (pink) on the Advent Wreath. This candle is called the Happy Candle. It means that we are happy to be within sight of Christmas as we continue our preparations. The Priest wears Rose Colour Vestments at Mass this weekend.
In the light of the Covid 19 restrictions it will not be possible to accommodate Christmas Mass attendances on the scale of previous years. It is important that everyone is appreciative of this. There will be some extra Masses but this will still not be sufficient, as both our Churches can accommodate less than 50.

It will also link them with family and friends not home for Christmas.

DIOCESAN ADVENT – CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE 2020
Since March 2020 Church Choirs have fallen silent and their members are missing the joy of singing and of being together. Christmas 2020 will be a very different time for Parishes and Choirs. This year, a diocesan-wide Carol Service will be streamed from the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne on this Sunday 13th December at 7.30pm. Ten choirs (with six members each) will participate from parishes throughout the Diocese of Cork and Ross via the Church Services webcam installed in their church. Some members of the Ovens Church Choir will be participating in the Carol Service. People from the Diocese are invited to join in the Carol Service via the Cathedral webcam:
https://www.corkcathedral.ie/live-stream/ on that evening. The words of the carols and full order of service can be downloaded from the Diocesan website www.corkandross.org beforehand to enable as many people and especially choir members to participate online.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The Annual Church Door collection for the local conference of St. Vincent de Paul is unable to go ahead in the normal way this year due to the pandemic. However, due to necessity, we have a few methods put in place for you, our loyal contributors.
- SVP collection boxes will be left in the foyer of Farran and Ovens Churches at all Masses this weekend for our Annual Collection.
- We will put freepost envelopes, with our Conference name, in both Churches and some outlets locally. This will enable you to make a donation in the knowledge that it will be returned to our Conference.
- You may also donate at svp.ie or call
0818 176176 and nominate St. Mary’s, Ovens/Kilmurry as the beneficiary.
We need your help this year more than ever before and thank you sincerely for supporting us year after year.
On behalf of SVP and all the families we support we wish you a safe and happy Christmas and better times in the New Year.
MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST (OVENS)
New Rota for the Ministers of the Eucharist may be collected after Mass.
CANON THOMAS J. MAGNER P.P.
On December 15th, 1920 Canon Thomas J. Magner P.P. Dunmanway was shot by British Auxiliary Forces a mile outside Dunmanway, together with a young local man, Timothy Crowley. This was just two weeks after the Kilmichael Ambush on 28th November and a few days after the Burning of Cork, 11th/12th December.
Canon Magner was a native of Ovens Parish. Knockanemore (Coach Road-Main Road). He was aged 73 and was ordained in the Irish College in Paris in 1876. He was brother of Fr. Patrick Magner C. C. Dunmanway, who died in 1886. Both were nephews of Fr. William Magner C.C. Innishannon who died in 1854 and in whose memory there is a plaque in Ovens Church Sacristy, over where he is buried.
