THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES
Thursday next is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes, 11th February. It is also World Day of Prayer for the sick.
The story of Lourdes begins with the story of St. Bernadette. She was born in Lourdes on 7th January 1844. She was the eldest of 9 children of Francois Soubirous and Louise Casterot. Her father was a miller but at the time of the apparitions was without work. The family lived in a disused prison cell in extreme poverty.
Bernadette spent some of her childhood in Bartres, about 3K from Lourdes. She stayed with her aunt and helped in looking after sheep. She had poor health and this was much better than the crowded cell. At the time of the Apparitions she had returned to Lourdes to prepare for her First Holy Communion and was then 14 years old.
The first Apparition of Our Lady was on 11th February 1858 and so the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes is on that date. There were 18 further apparitions, the final one on Friday 16th July, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It was on the 16th visit that Our Lady declared to Bernadette who she was, “I am the Immaculate Conception” on the 25th March, the Feast of the Annunciation.
There are 4 Gifts of Lourdes:
The gift of healing.
The gift of reconciliation
The gift of Miraculous Water
The gift of strength & friendship.

We are always mindful too of our three beautiful Lourdes Grottos in our parish, in Farran Church yard, at Ovens and in Walshestown.
Our Lady of Lourdes pray for us and for all the sick at this moment.

PRAYER ON THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES
On the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes we pray for all who are unwell in body or in mind.
Lord, bless those who are ill, give them Your healing and care. Be especially near to those who may never be well again.
Bless those who are sad, and comfort those whom no one else can comfort.
Lord, bless those who are worried about their own health or that of someone close to them and those who suffer from depression.
Lord, help us to remember that with Your help and the support of one another, there is much we can overcome together.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. St. Bernadette, pray for us.

ROSARY & BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
Lourdes is very much associated with the Rosary, the Blessed Sacrament, the Sick and Reconciliation. On Thursday night next at 7.30pm there will be Rosary, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and Prayer for the sick in Ovens Church. It will be live streamed on Webcam, without a congregation. Please let us join in prayer together.

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, 11TH FEBRUARY
World Day of the Sick is celebrated on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.
On that day Bishop Fintan will celebrate Mass in the Mercy University Hospital at 12noon. He is inviting people to join him virtually in the Mass in prayer and solidarity with the sick and in thanksgiving for healthcare workers in hospitals, residential care facilities and homes throughout the Diocese.
In his message for World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis says that it gives an “opportunity to devote special attention to the sick and to those who provide them with assistance and care both in healthcare institutions and within families and communities”.

The Mass will be live-streamed so that as many people as possible can participate from hospitals, nursing homes, other residential settings and family homes.

THANK YOU FOR PARISH CONTRIBUTIONS
Sincere thanks to the Ovens/Farran parishioners for the support they have given for the upkeep of the parish services during a most difficult time.
Thanks to all who dropped in envelopes, even though no Masses with congregations were taking place. Also, for the contributions received using the on-line and direct debit system. We are also grateful for contributions from the shrines, crib and, of course, the tax-back system.
The Tax-Back System is still open to new members for 2020 and 2021, who are tax payers, and have contributed an average of at least €5 per week (€250 for a year).

Contact; Fr. Liam for details.
