A PRAYER FOR TODAY
God, our heavenly Father,
grant us the fortitude of Christ your Son to face the Covid-19 crisis with trust, patience and compassion.
Give us the grace of the Holy Spirit to free us from fear and look forward together to the future with healing and hope.
Through the intercession of Saint Joseph,
the guardian of Jesus, and Mary His mother and mother of the Church, may we be guided through this time of peril.
Preserve us in peace, protect the vulnerable, keep safe our healthcare workers and all who serve society, at home and abroad.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

TEMPERANCE SUNDAY
This Sunday, 14th February is Temperance Sunday.
The message of Temperance Sunday is still very important. Perhaps with Covid-19 people have different challenges to deal with in terms of over use or indulgence, in screen time and phone use, gambling, on line shopping and in the use of alcohol.
Why not take the Pioneer Challenge. Why not abstain or reduce your intake of alcohol this Lent.
Short-Term Lenten Pledge Offering
I promise in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and with the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary to abstain from all intoxicating drink until Easter Sunday.

Novena Prayers in honour of Matt Talbot will be taking place online

at 6.30pm on the Mondays of Lent.
ASH WEDNESDAY/CEADAOIN AN LUAITHRIGH 2021
Wednesday next, 17th February is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
Lent is designed as a time of Prayer and Reflection for us and concludes with the celebration of the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus during Holy Week and Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday will be different this year due to the Coronavirus restrictions. Ashes will be blessed at the 9.30am Mass, Live streamed on Webcam in Ovens Church (without a congregation). After Mass ashes will be available from both Ovens and Farran Churches from 10.30am in specially prepared Diocesan packets. Each envelope will also contain a prayer.
This may form a very meaningful time of family prayer on Ash Wednesday.
Lent invites us to strive to lead better lives and is a time of prayer and reflection for us. It reminds us too that life is short and we need to live our lives as best we can and in accordance with the Word of God.
Indeed, it is something too that the Coronavirus has taught us.
BLESSING WITH ASHES, A RITUAL FOR THE HOME
(shortened form, full text in envelope)
In the name of the Father….
We praise the Lord of grace, mercy and peace. The Scriptures remind us: “Now is the favourable time, this is the day of Salvation”.
God our Father, as we begin our Lenten journey open our hearts to you as we place these Blessed Ashes on our foreheads and pray:
Make the sign of the Cross with the Ashes on the forehead of people in the household saying:
“Repent and believe in the Gospel”.
Prayer concludes with the sign of the Cross.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF TRÓCAIRE FROM FR. JAMES OYET LATANSIO IN SOUTH SUDAN
South Sudan, where I call home and where the two families on your Lent boxes this year are struggling to survive, is going through deep pain. The dangers of the spread of Covid-19 is still very high, because of the security risk. Our health facilities are what they are. We are still in the situation of conflict. In the situation of violence. Our children cannot go to school and they pay the highest price. Their parents don’t know a way out of this situation.
These are my people in South Sudan today. These precious children, women and men.
In their poverty, in their fears of the consequences of war, in their traumatised spirits, they are still trying their best to come out of it.
My appeal to you is, please don’t leave South Sudan alone.
Ask your parishes to give this Lent. Tell them our story. Give us that blessing. We need your prayers. We need your support. It’s my cry to you. ( To be continued next week).
