OBSERVING LENTEN FAST
(In the words of Pope Francis)
Fast from hurting and say kind words.
Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.
Fast from anger and be filled with patience.
Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.
Fast from worries and have trust in God.
Fast from complaints; Contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressures and be prayerful.
Fast from bitterness; Fill your hearts with joy.
Fast from selfishness and be compassionate.
Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
Fast from words and listen.
ASH WEDNESDAY 2021
Ash Wednesday this year was quite different. The Blessed Ashes could not be distributed in the usual way due to the Covid 19 restrictions.
On Wednesday last, Ash Wednesday, the ashes were blessed at the 9.30am Mass by Monsignor Kevin O’Callaghan. This Mass was, of course, live streamed on the Webcam. After Mass the Blessed Ashes were placed in special Diocesan envelopes together with the prescribed prayer and made available at the altar of both Ovens & Farran Churches. Thanks to Mary O’Callaghan and Catherine O’Connor who made these preparations.
The number of people who came to both Churches throughout the day to collect the envelopes was truly remarkable. Social distancing and sanitising was very much observed. People also spent some quite time in private prayer. The ashes were taken home to be distributed, with prayer in the home, the Domestic Church. Some also took an envelope for someone in their bubble. The envelopes too needed to be replenished in both Churches a few times during the day.
Please God Lent will be a time of prayer and reflection for us, within the Covid 19 guidelines.
A PERSONAL MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF TRÓCAIRE FROM FR. JAMES OYET LATANSIO IN SOUTH SUDAN
(CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK)
This partnership here with Trócaire and Cafod, it goes beyond partnership. It is joining, holding our hands together. Staff are always on the frontlines. They leave their good life to walk with us through these in the fields of South Sudan.
It is faith in action. I know this because I am also the beneficiary of support from the Catholic Church through Trócaire and Cafod.
I am a Priest because of it. Because of the books, the chalks, the pens. People from Trócaire supported me to go to school. Supported me to study. Supported me even to travel to Maynooth, where I did my courses.
Maybe the Lord called them to give this support. It has resulted in change for the better & I want to thank them very much.
Before I leave you, I have one last request. My experiences in South Sudan inspired me to write this Lenten prayer for peace. I share it with you here in the hope that you will pray it in your Masses this Lent and lift every Irish voice in solidarity and love with the people of South Sudan:
As we move through the Lenten time, the time when we contemplate Jesus in the desert,
Pray for us the people of South Sudan and pray for peace here.
Accompany us, hold our hands, hold the hands of the church in South Sudan.
Hold the hands of our brothers and sisters in South Sudan,
Walk with us during this Lent time.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen
