FEAST OF ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA
This Sunday, 13th June is the Feast of St. Anthony.
Lilies will be blessed at the 9.30am Mass in Farran and the 11.30am Mass in Ovens.
Lilies may be handed in to either Church on Saturday or on Sunday morning before the Masses.
As St. Anthony was noted for his devotion to the sick and dying, you may wish to bring a blessed lily to a friend or relative who may be ill at present.
There is a tradition also, of course, of praying to St. Anthony to find lost or stolen items.
11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
After Lent, the Easter season and three Sundays of feast days, Pentecost, the most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi, the Church returns to Ordinary Time.
On this the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, The First Scripture Reading is from the Prophet Ezekiel:
“I, the Lord, bring low the high tree and lift high the lowly tree”.
The Second Reading is from the 2nd Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians:
“The lives of all are to be revealed before the tribunal of Christ”.
The Gospel reading is from St. Mark 4:26-34.
The reading consists of two parables about seeds. Jesus tells those gathered that this is “how it is with the kingdom of God”. A man scatters seed which over time sprouts and develops. When the grain is ripe the crop is harvested. The emphasis in the parable is on the seed. Jesus planted the seeds of the kingdom by his life, miracles, teaching and suffering. Just as the seed in the parable needs time to grow so does God’s kingdom.
The second parable focuses on the tiny mustard seed. Small as the mustard seed is it develops into a tree & provides a nesting place for birds. Just as the tree welcomes the birds, so is God’s kingdom welcoming & open to many.
But just as seeds need time to come to fruition, so does the Kingdom of God.
THE LEAVING CERT
During these weeks of June, there is much emphasis on the Leaving Certificate and on the young people who take that exam. It is, of course, a very important exam but neither should it define their lives. There are many other wonderful qualities in life that are not defined by exam results and which are very present in so many young people today and always. With that in mind we pray for all young people through this prayer/reflection and especially for those doing the leaving cert these weeks:
A YOUTH’S PRAYER
We offer to you, loving God, our gifts and needs as young people.
Bless us with your guiding grace, as we face the challenges and opportunities in our lives.
Touch our hearts with the gentleness of your love, that we may know we are valued beings.
Send your spirit of hope to our lives, that we may believe in ourselves, and know how we are needed in this world.
Grace us with the gift of joy, that we may celebrate life through laughter and tears alike.
In this journey of faith we walk together.
We ask this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
OUR DEEPEST FEAR
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frighten us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually who are we not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine as children do.
And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
