FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
This Sunday, the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King.
There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Ovens Church from 1pm to 6pm. Rosary will be recited every hour on the hour.
Exposition concludes with Evening Prayer and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 5.45pm.
Sheets have been placed in the main porches of both Churches, where you may fill in your name to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament during the day.
PRAYER FOR THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
O Lord our God, You alone are the Most Holy King & Ruler of all nations.
We pray to You, Lord, in the great expectation of receiving from You, O Divine King, mercy, peace, justice and all good things.
Protect, O Lord our King, our families and the land of our birth.
Guard us we pray Most Faithful One.
Forgive us, O Sovereign King, our sins against You.
Jesus, You are a King of mercy.
We have deserved Your Just Judgement.
Have mercy on us, Lord, and forgive us.
We trust in Your Great Mercy.
Amen.
ADVENT
Next Sunday, 28th November, is the first Sunday of Advent, the first Sunday of the new Church Year.
The Tree of Remembrance, for all those who passed away in our Parish and elsewhere during the past year and which has been in place since the start of November, will be replaced by the Jesse Tree, the Tree of Life.
The Jesse Tree represents the royal genealogy of Christ, beginning with Jesse, the father of David. The image of the tree was taken from Isaiah, “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse and from its roots a bud shall blossom”.
Each week the tree will be decorated with symbols that represent stories from the Old Testament beginning with the story of Creation and ending with the birth of Jesus. The tree is used to emphasise the true meaning of Advent and Christmas.
ADVENT WREATH
Light in the Darkness:
A lit candle has always been a sign of expectation and hope. In the days before Christianity in Scandinavia, people placed lit candles on a wheel, prayers were offered to their god of light in the hope that the earth’s wheel would be turned back toward the sun, bringing light and warmth.
Today’s Advent Wreaths:
The evergreens used in today’s wreaths represent everlasting life, holly leaves and berries represent the crown of thorns and blood and pine cones symbolise the Resurrection. Next weekend the Advent wreaths in both Ovens and Farran Churches will be blessed and the first of the purple candles will be lit.
DIOCESAN PLANNING MEETING
Last week Bishop Fintan Gavin convened a meeting of the Priests of Cork & Ross Dioceses.
It took place from Sunday 14th November to Thursday 18th in Killarney. The purpose of the meeting was to begin the process of planning for the future of the Diocese.
The meeting was facilitated by Ms. Judith King from Donegal, but now living in Bray, Co. Wicklow, and Ms. Marie Garvey from Cork but now living in Belfast. Both have much experience in working with groups in many areas of development and also with Religious Congregations and Dioceses. This experience was very evident.
It is clear that the future of the Diocese and Parishes is going to be very different. While no big decisions were taken, preparations were discussed for these, which will need to be made in the near future.
