PRAYING THE PSALMS
PSALM NO. 16
Preserve me God, I take refuge in You.
I say to the Lord: “You are my God.
My happiness lies in you alone”.

Giving ourselves over to sleep, acknowledging our need for rest,
Accepting our mortality,
Letting go, trusting only in God.

LIKE A ROSE PLANTED
Over the entrance to the Rosary Basilica in Lourdes are inscribed the words “Like a Rose planted by the rivers of water, bear fruit”.
They form a fitting background for a reflection on the message of Lourdes. “Like a rose”, without movement a rose transmits its own fragrance. By it’s beauty of colour and richness of scent, it draws people in admiration.
When the Immaculate Virgin appeared, two roses in full bloom were at her feet. Mary is titled the “Mystical Rose”, the “Hidden Rose”, and by her very presence she transformed a fetid refuse dump with a fragrance that has, ever since, filled the grotto.
That fragrance drew and filled the heart of the little girl who knelt at her feet. It is said that the ‘the person who is loved generates love’. Bernadette was loved with the tender love of a mother. Just as the beauty of the Lady was reflected on her countenance, so her soul was enriched. She generated love. She grew in holiness like a rose in full bloom and the fragrance of her holiness has been transmitted to countless souls.
‘Planted by the rivers of water’. At the word of the virgin waters sprang up from the earth, at first a trickle, but growing into a mighty river, a great sacramental fountain.
‘Like a rose planted’ is more than a colourful phrase. It describes the reality of holiness, that has been the experience, like the beauty of a rose, that has entranced countless human hearts.
The desert shall rejoice and blossom.
(Is 35:1)
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for me.

ASH WEDNESDAY
This year Ash Wednesday is on 2nd March, the first day of Lent. Ash Wednesday is a time for us to focus on repentance and prayer and to get ready for the 40 days of Lent.
The ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from the burned palms left over from Palm Sunday.
Ashes will be blessed in Ovens Church during the 9.30am Mass on Ash Wednesday. People will then be invited to come to the altar and have the ashes placed on their foreheads, with the words “From dust you came, and to dust you shall return”. Ashes will also be available after Mass to take home for family members.
