SECOND COLLECTION
The annual collection for the Priesthood Education Fund in the Diocese will be taken up at all Masses this weekend. This year two seminarians will begin studies in St. Patrick’s College Maynooth. Both have completed a year of initial formation in Valladolid last year. Another man is studying for the Permanent Diaconate in the Diocese. The Priesthood Education Fund will finance their studies as well as costs for ongoing training and education for priests. In the region of €110,000 will be needed to meet these costs in the coming year. Last year €70,616 was raised in this collection, which was very generous.
Appreciating that these are difficult financial times, you are asked to be as generous as you can to the Priesthood collection this year.
REFLECTION, SAINTS IN SEASON
Thursday last, 21st September was the Feast Day of St. Matthew the Apostle.
God of Mercy,
You chose a tax collector, Saint Matthew, to share the dignity of the Apostles.
By his example and prayers help us to follow Christ and remain faithful in your service.

New members very welcome to join Ovens Church Choir.
Practice Thursdays, 8 to 9/9.30pm, from the end of September. We sing every 2nd Sunday, extra liturgical events, 2 Christmas Masses & Easter Ceremonies.

ALPHA YOUTH
Alpha Youth in Ballincollig invites 13 to 18 year olds to meet for 9 Wednesdays (7.15pm to 8.45pm), starting 4th October. Alpha Youth will explore questions about life, faith, and more. All this in an open, informal atmosphere with food, games, chats and videos from the Alpha Youth Series. All will be welcome. No previous experience of Church needed!

DIACONATE JOURNEY
A Message from Deacon Frank McKevitt
Ours began 10 years ago this month. I needed a nudge to complete my application and forward it to the Director of the Diaconate formation. Ordained 4 years later and now beginning my 7th year in active ministry. The journey has enriched my family. spiritual and professional life.
Deacons’ priorities are, family first and foremost, career and then ministry. The ministry of the Deacon is as old as the Church. Some high profile Deacons are, St. Stephen, St. Patrick & St. Francis of Assisi. Deacons have a foot in 2 camps, the secular world and as an ordained minister who comes to serve and not be served within the faith community. Just like all volunteer ministries within a parish and those who give so freely of their time and talents, Diaconate is a voluntary unpaid ministry..
Some highlights being: involvement with the RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation for Adults), preparing adults for Baptism and Confirmation, involvement in funeral ministry & visiting sick or housebound & celebrating with families on baptismal days are always joy filled occasions.
Proclaiming the Gospel is a singular privilege. The preparation and delivery of homilies is the most challenging aspect of my ministry. Endeavouring to make the “Good News” relevant in the ordinary every day, as Jesus did.
The symbol of the Diaconate is the basin & towel, a reminder to the Deacon that ministry is all about service of the faith community. My hope & prayer is that I shall prove worthy.
